“Your special and safe haven exists internally and externally. When the two create a relationship with the natural world, you are home.”

“Your special and safe haven exists internally and externally. When the two create a relationship with the natural world, you are home.”

Heidi’s passion lies in the expression of culturally intersecting landscapes and the courageous connections between what is built, unbuilt, tame, and untamed. She incorporates the gifts of the existing site or historical site conditions:  land, water, and light. She maps movement and circulation with the pathways created by light, topography, drainage, and seasonal changes. Heidi uses this baseline information so that her clients can build a relationship with these natural systems to inform their decision making. She designs liveable, peaceful and interactive outdoor spaces that connect and extend interior spaces. Existing natural features are often focal points, the ephemeral streams are primary water collectors. Natural materials – stone, native plantings, and edible gardens are found in most of her work.

Heidi obtained her degree in Landscape Architecture in 1988 from the University of British Columbia. Heidi authored Park Visions – Parks Masterplan for the Resort Municipality of Whistler and led the development of a multi-million dollar park development plan that included the Whistler Valley trail system and the design of destination parks. Heidi established MacPherson Land Planning, a small multidisciplinary firm specializing in landscape design, public art, and resort planning.

She leaves Whistler with traces of Jeju basaltic landmarks, Korean Fir, Siberian Spruce, and fields of seasonal colour throughout the landscapes of Whistler.

“We are witnessing a globalization of aesthetics and style, a borrowing of cultural vernaculars to fit our consumption of trends. The ecosystem in which you reside is a living system, just as we are. Why not express that fully and courageously?”
